Body Beauty Tricks to Look Better in Shorts

And while a recent midsummer night's stroll had us gasping at the sheer amount of pantslessness that surrounded us, and contemplating the fine line between shorts and skivvies, it also had us blessing our lucky stars for the beauty experts that could arm us with information to help ourselves, and our readers, prep for these shortest of short situations.
Whether you're self-conscious about having extremely pale legs, want to conceal spider veins, dark spots, and cellulite, choose the right hair removal treatment, or find a nail polish that will elongate your legs, our spot-on expert advice will help you get a leg up on looking fabulous in shorts.
There are not too many things in the world that rub us the wrong way more than ingrown hairs. With our legs in desperate need of a little TLC, waxing guru Paz Stark recommends dry exfoliating the day after getting waxed to maintain smooth skin.
"I'm obsessed with waxing, so that's why I opened up the waxing studio. I got the best wax and the best aestheticians, but what I learned shortly after opening was key and didn't require money," she says.
Using a loofah or the Stark Exfoliating Mitt -- which is made out of natural agave fiber and does not have a back that will trap bacteria -- rough polish your legs in circular motions to remove the top layer of skin so that your hair doesn't get trapped.
"If you do it once a day before getting into the shower you will really see the results. And if you're already experiencing bumps and ingrown hairs, start doing it!"
Be sure to follow up exfoliating with a hydrating post-treatment like Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Body Serum which instantly softens and smooths skin, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and gradually creates a firmer appearance.
Golden, bronze skin is what everyone is in search of. But with all the health risks linked to lying out in the sun (not to mention the tanning tax), women are reaching for bottles of bronzer that do double-duty like Scott Barnes Body Bling and Jemma Kidd Show Stopper.

"I created it to be a moisturizer with a heavily-tinted color, so the results are instantaneous," says celebrity makeup artist Scott Barnes. "You're getting a treatment and it's concealing at the same time. Who doesn't want that?"
If you have fair skin, use Body Bling in Platinum for more of a gradual glow. And if you have medium to dark skin, go straight for the Original. But if you want to amp up your "tan," Barnes suggests mixing his bronzers to accentuate your skin tone as your complexion changes throughout the summer months.
"Let's take the complication out of it all," he says. "Just slap it on and go!"
Baring skin in warm weather can be tricky, but fashion-favorite makeup artist Romero Jennings believes that anyone can feel confident if they know the right tricks. While he's used to prettying up models and stars that are practically flawless, cellulite, veins, bruises, discoloration, and stretch marks are universal concerns he tackles with his brushes.
For an illuminating glow that reduces the appearance of your "flaws," you'd want to recreate Jennings' "Royal Celebrity Red Carpet Leg."
With skin that's moisturized, conceal with Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder and warm up the leg with matte Bronzing Powder. Add a bronzer with metallic properties for a touch of shimmer -- highlighting the shin and knee areas of the leg. And for maximum shine, use Mineralize Skinfinish.
The same process works on fair skin, too, says Jennings. Choose a lighter toned bronzer and shimmer instead.
And while you're flaunting your hot legs, don't forget about your toes!
If you want to add a few inches to your height, celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann suggests painting on a neutral nail polish that matches your skin tone like Fashion or No More Drama. "In the same way that nude shoes elongate your legs, a nude nail color can have the same effect."
Maintain your pedicure from the sun's rays by using a topcoat with a UV inhibitor that will prevent polish from turning colors. Lippmann also recommends protecting your cuticle's by smoothing on moisturizer to keep feet hydrated and stop nail breakage. And be sure to address toes marked with corns or discoloration by gently brushing on a concealer like PrettyToes Fade-n-Cover.

The inspiration for the shoot with Jack Guy (on page 100) was classic, sexy and beachy at the same time. To me that meant clean, shimmery and sun-kissed skin with light smoky eyes and sheer lips. With elegant clothes, accessories and makeup, the story has a sense of timelessness.

ELLE BEAUTY OBSESSION
Rejoice: The days of orange self-tanner, à la La Lohan, are over. "It's no longer about appearing like you're been baking in the sun," says St. Tropez tanning guru Fiona Locke, who has pointed a spray-tan nozzle at many Dancing With the Stars hopefuls. "People want to have a radiant glow that seems like it comes from within." To achieve natural-looking color, prep skin by exfoliating away any dead cells that might impede an even application, and always pay attention to the details: "If you're working with a spray, start at the bottom and work your way up so that there won't be any excess at your feet," Locke says. If you want to appear both radiant and buff, you can go back over and contour with a bronzing powder or a deeper shade of self-tanner. "I call it the flex-and-tone approach," Locke says. "Stand on your tip-toes, flex your arms, and watch where the shadows below the muscles appear -- that's where you want to add more color." This trick can also be used by women with naturally dark skin to sculpt their limbs: Although it may seem counterintuitive, bronzers "give a gorgeous luster to African-American skin," says makeup artist Scott Barnes, whose Body Bling is beloved by everyone from J.Lo to Beyoncé. As a finishing touch, apply an illuminator or pearlescent powder to the clavicles, the top of the shoulders, and down the front of the shins. "The shimmery highlights make the body appear longer and leaner," Barnes says.
InStyle - Beauty Q&A
Q: I've heard that you can use makeup to make legs look slimmer. How?
A: "Legs look leaner and more toned when they have a bit of a glow," says N.Y.C. makeup artist Linda Hay, who suggests exfoliating weekly for a smooth base. A gradual tanner can add a hint of color over time, but if you want instant results, go with bronzing lotion. Apply in circular motion to prevent streaking. To create the illusion of slimmer legs, dab a touch of highlighter down the center of each leg, blending well to ensure a natural effect.

Beauty guru behind J.Lo's glow
What is the `J.Lo Glow?'
``Essentially, it's a monochromatic palette, with glossy, nude lips and dewy skin. It makes you look youthful no matter your age. It's looking lit from within.''
How did you achieve Lopez's look in her new movie?
``Well, she's already gorgeous. She's Jennifer Lopez, for God's sake. Her character had money but was a free spirit, a pet shop owner, so I made her kind of hip, modern, clean, pretty. A little more glamorous than a plain Jane that lives next door.''
Tell us about the book.
``A large part of it focuses on makeovers of real women, ages 19 to 64, transforming the everyday woman into a movie star, like they did the old days, sending the actresses to Max Factor.''
What is the message?
``It's about the power of beauty. It's one thing to make yourself up for vanity's sake and quite another when your look can affect the outcomes of lives around you, using your beauty to be heard.''
Can you give an example?
``The [biblical] Book of Esther. She becomes queen of Persia because of her grooming and wound up leading an entire race of people. It doesn't get more significant than that.''
Anyone in modern day?
``Nancy Pelosi is always put together very well. If a beautiful woman is talking you're more apt to listen.''
So unattractive women won't be listened to?
``The bra-burning is passe? -- not that it's not important or relevant. But what better power than to be gorgeous? That's why society listens to celebrities and why politics has gotten so heavily into Hollywood. Like, it wasn't about the inauguration, it was more about a who's who.''
Beside Lopez, whom do you consider gorgeous and powerful?
``I love Kim Kardashian. Her face is freakishly symmetrical. Very rarely do I see that. She has a great skin, a great smile. Very charming.''
What is the best makeup advice you can give South Florida women?
``Protect yourself from the sun. Fake a tan. Tanning beds are shaped like coffins for a reason.''

Get the JLo Glow - Body Bling Tanning Illuminator by Scott Barnes
By Carol Hilker
Ever wonder where Jennifer Lopez gets her perfect tan?
From a bottle of course.
Self-tanners are now a staple when it comes to a good beauty regime for any ghostly, pale lady out there. It is just about the only way to safely get a great tan without damaging your skin with harmful UV rays.
The one common complaint when it comes to faking a tan is that it can streak or sometimes, depending on your skin tone, make you appear to be orange (think Oompa Loompa). I personally, have issues with never washing the self-tanner completely off of my hands. I think anyone that has ever used a self-tanner can attest to having had a streaky mess on their hands, feet or knees...
Many beauty companies have come to the rescue by developing a way to get color with even less of a commitment. Companies like Nars, LORAC and Napoleon Perdis have released tanning illuminators and bronzing mousses that give you an amazing glow...just until you wash it off.
One of the coolest is the Scott Barnes Body Bling. Personally, I am kind of over J-Lo, but I have to admit that I have been jealous of her tan since the late 90’s.
Scott Barnes is the man behind creating gorgeous looks for his numerous celebrity clients, however the iconic looks he created for Jennifer Lopez started a cosmetics revolution and gave birth to a new look coined “the glow” – monochromatic, with bronzed skin and pale lips –that dewy, Greek goddess look.
This signature look became known as “lit from within” and started a trend among many cosmetic companies who launched products like Nars blush in Orgasam, and brought back nude lips.
Scott Barnes took matters into his own hand and launched the world famous shimmering bronzer, Body Bling. Body Bling is perfect for spring and summer body prep – available in two editions, Original and Platinum. The wildly popular sunless tanning illuminator gives everyone the Hollywood look of sexy, beautiful, glowing skin...without the risk of sun damage, or streaks.
To use: “Put it on the body like a moisturizer to even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of cellulite, spider veins, sun damage, etc. The light from the Body Bling attracts the eye, making legs, arms – everywhere! – appear slicker and slimmer. I always remind clients to apply it liberally to give ample coverage and effect,” says Scott.

It takes a lot to look like J.Lo!
"With Jennifer, I always try to make her look glamorous, feminine and delicate, because that look never goes out of style," Scott Barnes, Jennifer Lopez's makeup artist, explains to In Touch, adding that he usually takes two hours to complete the star's makeup transformation. "I suggest each look for her based on the event she'll be attending, and I certainly pay attention to her wardrobe and accessories, too."
Scott's expertise is invaluable to Jennifer, 40, because he introduced her to contouring - it's the secret to a flawless face for the singer and so many other stars. "Everybody has different places you want to highlight and take away from," she told In Touch at the launch of Scott's new book, About Face. In addition to working his magic with his favorite products, Jennifer says the best advice he has given her has been to get plenty of beauty rest - and stay out of the the sun! "He really nailed that into my head," Jennifer explains. "We've known each other for 10 years, and have always used self-tanners and bronzers to protect my skin."

Fashion's 50 most fascinating: The NYers who make this $10B industry work - and make us look good
Fashion Week kicks off this morning with BCBG Max Azria's Fall collection but so much of the excitement surrounding the $10 billion industry's biggest event is taking place outside the Bryant Park tents.
Proof the style spectacular is starting to loosen its exclusivity? Designers like Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs are, for the first time ever, broadcasting their shows online. Naomi Campbell opened up tomorrow's Fashion for Haiti runway show to the paying public (it's sold out). And even Anna Wintour is letting her right hand man Andre Leon Talley serve as judge on "America's Next Top Model."
Since the fashion industry in NY employs 175,000 regular folk to get these clothes on racks and into shoppers' hands, letting everybody in on the behind-the-scenes magic is more important now than ever.
22. SCOTT BARNES, makeup artist Makeup guru Barnes, who's groomed New Yorkers from Gwyneth to Beyoncé, is, of course, best known for giving J.Lo her signature "Glow" — and anyone can replicate the healthy but glammy vibe of bronzed skin and pale lips, thanks to products like his best- selling Body Bling bronzer.
